Helen’s
Daughters Handbags started in 1989 between two sisters, Mariella in
Minnesota and Char in Wisconsin. Helen was their mother. Their purse
business honors her and all she taught them about being creative,
loving life and having fun. They both graduated from the University
of Wisconsin – Stout - nine years apart. They work on their designs
in separate studios and have similar styles. They do shows and fairs
in the upper Midwest. Some are Mariella’s shows, some are Char’s and
some shows they do together – look for Helen’s Daughters.
They work with upholstery fabrics. Each Helen’s Daughters design
start in a sketchbook. The pattern is drafted and the prototype is
made. Most designs require tweaking and the final design is ready
for production. Some Helen’s Daughters bags are basic, while others
are elegant or fun. Char and Mariella do all the sewing themselves.
They have no apprentices.
Helen’s Daughters (Char and Mariella) love designing and making
handbags with interesting textures, color and shape. They love
working with their customers and will do custom work.
They no longer have their Helen’s Daughters downtown Baraboo shop on
Oak Street. Private visits to their home studios are available.
Contacting them first is required or find them at area art fairs and
shows.
